On March 28, 2025, the national standard GB/T 45486-2025 “Ships and Marine Technology — Numerical Simulation and Calculation for Scale-Up of UV Reactors in Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS)” was officially released by the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China. This marks China’s technical specifications in the field of ship ballast water treatment entering the globally leading ranks. The birth of this milestone standard is inseparable from the in-depth participation of Lightbest (Chinese brand: 光太; English brand: Lightbest) — as one of the core drafting organizations, Lightbest, with over a decade of accumulated ultraviolet technology experience, provided critical data support and engineering validation for the formulation of the standard, helping Chinese standards step onto the world stage.

From Standard Setter to Industry Definer: The Technical Strength of Lightbest

Ballast water is an important guarantee of ship navigation safety; however, untreated ballast water may carry invasive organisms and pose a serious threat to the marine ecosystem. According to the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), ships worldwide are required to fully install compliant Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS) by 2024. As the core component of BWMS, the performance of the ultraviolet reactor directly determines treatment effectiveness and ship operational efficiency.

The newly released GB/T 45486-2025 standard, for the first time, clearly defines the numerical simulation methods and calculation criteria for scale-up of ultraviolet reactors from laboratory models to actual engineering applications, filling a technical gap both domestically and internationally. Relying on its profound accumulation in the field of ultraviolet disinfection, Lightbest took the lead in completing multiple key experiments: by simulating the hydrodynamic characteristics and ultraviolet dose distribution of reactors at different scales, the reactor structural design was optimized; combined with actual ship operating conditions, a dynamic adjustment model was established to ensure a balance between treatment efficiency and energy consumption. These achievements were not only incorporated into the standard text but also became an important reference for global shipbuilders in designing BWMS.

Application Scenarios: the three core areas of ship drinking water purification, ballast water treatment, and domestic sewage treatment, with cumulative service on over a thousand ships worldwide.

“Our products not only need to pass international certifications, but also must withstand real ship testing,” said the Technical Director of Lightbest. At present, the company has obtained globally authoritative certifications including CE, FCC, UKCA, ROHS, EPA, EPR, and UL, and, leveraging advantages of low energy consumption, long lifespan, and high stability, has become a long-term partner of numerous domestic and international shipping companies.

Deep Integration of Industry, Academia, and Research: Lightbest’s Innovation Engine

The strong technical capability of Lightbest stems from continuous investment in technological innovation. As the industry–university–research cooperation base of Changzhou Institute of Technology, the company has jointly established laboratories with universities, focusing on cutting-edge topics such as ultraviolet spectrum analysis and material corrosion resistance. The factory has cumulatively obtained 23 national invention patents, is recognized as a national-level technology-oriented small and medium-sized enterprise, a national high-tech enterprise, and has passed SGS international certification, building a complete innovation chain from basic research to engineering transformation.

“We are not only a manufacturer but also a technology service provider,” emphasized the General Manager of Lightbest. The company provides customized solutions for ship clients, offering technical support throughout the entire process, from reactor selection to system commissioning. To comply with the latest EU environmental regulations, the electromagnetic compatibility design of the electronic ballasts has been optimized.

Global Layout: From Chinese Standards to the World Market

With the official implementation of GB/T 45486-2025 on October 1, 2025, Lightbest has made full preparations. At present, Lightbest’s products have been exported to more than 30 countries and regions, including Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, becoming a benchmark brand of “China Intelligent Manufacturing” in the field of ship environmental protection.

From participating in the formulation of national standards to leading global technological trends, Lightbest has, with a single ultraviolet germicidal lamp, illuminated the green future of China’s shipbuilding industry. In the future, the company will continue to use innovation as its sail and quality as its helm, working hand in hand with global partners to jointly safeguard the ecological security of the blue ocean.
